Packing up for 3 gun can be a chore with all the gear and guns required. I usually use an older Flambeau double rifle case to squeeze all my guns in, but when I saw that Cabela’s was selling the RangeMaxx Tactical 3-gun case on sale, I had to see if it’d protect the guns better. It can hold up to 3 guns (2 long guns and 1 pistol) in one package. They are 83.99 Canadian right now and are 79.99 in the US.

Padding
This case is a soft case, so it has padding on the exterior as well and the interior sections have padding between them. The pistol pouch inside of it is completely padded as well. The guns do not shift around in the case due to velcro straps that hold the guns back.
Usability
The oversized zippers don’t snag as often as smaller zippers. Most pouches use 2 way zippers like luggage, so you can open them from a side or the middle. The zippers all have grab strings on them.
How it’s made (zippers, material,etc)
The inside is padded with dense foam padding and 600D (D stands for denier which is a measure of how thick or dense the yarn is) polyester fabric over top. Because the polyester used is 600D, it is a durable material but it’s heavier. 2 of the outer pouches have orange mesh pockets while the other 2 have fabric mag pouches.
The RangeMaxx soft case vs a hard case
- Most hard cases with pick and pull foam are $200+.
- Those hard cases are usually pretty heavy, but more durable
- Hard cases do better in harsh weather. Some are watertight.
- Hard cases usually have better spots to put a lock on or have a combo lock built in. With this one, you have to lock the zippers together
- Soft cases like this include more expandable storage. Hard cases don’t have extra storage, they just have 1 big internal section.
- Hard cases do not have pouches for ammo and accessories
- Hard cases usually do not have borders so you have to buy them and install them
Pick and pull foam is excellent for protecting firearms, but is less flexible for taking multiple different kinds of firearms. One of my not so secret pet peeves is seeing people posting pics of their first gun right in the middle of a monstrously huge case, having picked foam for only 1 gun. Most of those large hard cases could hold 2 long guns, or at least a long gun and a pistol.
In any case, soft cases like this one won’t suffer from that problem. They’ll take most any gun you can stick in there, no foam to pick. Maybe that’s a bigger problem for me, since I have to change guns so often, than it is for you.
Conclusion
A large hard case would be a better investment for most people, but would have been less ideal for what I wanted to do. The low cost, low weight, decent padding, and extra storage are going to come in handy for 3 gun and for Mapleseed, and the price was super reasonable, so that’s why I picked this particular case up.
