Alex’s Homebrew TM22 Upper and Rear Charging Handle

The Derya TM22 has taken the Canadian rimfire market by storm because it looks, feels, and handles like an AR-15. However, it still uses a side-charging handle, which breaks that muscle memory for many shooters. Alex’s Home Brew has stepped in with a Gen 2 kit designed to convert the TM22 to a rear-charging configuration. Alex sent me this product for review.

Overview

This kit replaces the factory top plate and end plate of the TM22 to allow for a traditional AR-style charging handle. It is compatible with both Gen 1 and Gen 2 TM22 rifles, though it is not compatible with the “Feather” lightweight models. At a price point of approximately $250, it is a significant investment for a rimfire rifle, but it fundamentally changes the ergonomics of the platform.

Specifications

  • Compatibility: Derya TM22 Gen 1 and Gen 2 (Standard aluminum receivers).
  • Materials: Machined aluminum top plate and charging handle; 3D printed/finished anti-tilt bolt insert.
  • Features: Ball detent on the charging handle for secure lockup.
  • Origin: Made in Canada.
  • MSRP: $240 CAD

Usability and Installation

Installation is relatively straightforward, but there are a few “gotchas” to watch out for. When removing the factory top plate, pay close attention to the screws. They are progressively shorter from back to front. The longest screw belongs in the rear, the medium in the middle, and the shortest in the front.

The kit includes an anti-tilt insert for the bolt. While this part appears to be 3D printed, it has been sanded and finished for a smoother fit. You will also need to swap out the factory end plate. On some rifles, the castle nut may be loose enough to move by hand, but you might need a castle nut wrench if yours was tightened well at the factory.

Once installed, the manual of arms is similar to an AR-15. The charging handle has a ball detent to keep it from reciprocating or sliding out. The edges of the handle are a bit sharp, but this provides excellent grip, especially if you are wearing gloves or operating the rifle in the rain.

Competitors

Currently, Alex’s Home Brew is the primary player in this niche. While there are various 3D printed side-charging handle extensions available on the market, this is the only robust, aluminum solution that moves the charging interface to the rear of the receiver.

Conclusion

This is the way to go if you are using your TM22 as a gamer 22. It is a well-engineered piece of kit that replaces plastic or side-mounted components with sturdy aluminum. While the $250 price tag is steep compared to the cost of the rifle, the improvement in ergonomics is undeniable.
