The Cabela’s Covenant AR 1-8×24 scope is an inexpensive LPVO. It comes with a cantilever mount that should let you mount it a bit further forward on a receiver, like you need to do on most AR’s or other flat top sporting rifles.
The Good:
- The price is unbelievably good (I bought this one for $219 on sale)
- Comes with a mount, quick throw lever, and neoprene scope cover
- Illuminated dot looks great at dusk
The Bad:
- The optical quality is not great
- Warranty sucks
- I don’t really like the reticle (2 bars coming in from side instead of duplex)
- The dot is not daytime bright
- No auto shutoff on the dot, so you’ll kill batteries all the time
- Eye box is not very forgiving
- 2 clicks per MOA is pretty chunky, but at least you get 30 MOA per revolution
What can you use it for?
As a beginner or value priced optic for 3 gun, there isn’t much to compare it to. Other LPVO’s are quite a bit more expensive than this scope so it’s kind of in a league of its own. If you want an inexpensive scope to shoot 3 gun with, this is about as inexpensive as it gets.
For big game hunting, I’d rather use a scope that has a larger objective that can gather more light in the early morning or at dusk (ie: a 3-9×40). I guess you could use it on a small game hunting rifle where your shots are closer but again, I’d rather have more light gathering and magnification.
