Mossberg MVP Patrol 556 Review

Mossberg MVP Patrol 556 Review

The Mossberg MVP Patrol is an American-made, bolt action, 223/5.56 rifle. It uses STANAG (AR15) mags and is nice and lightweight.

Specifications

  • 5.56 Nato (or 223, it’ll take both)
    • Also available in 308 and 300 blackout
  • 16.25″ barrel with threaded muzzle
  • I weighed this one to be 5.7lbs, not sure why Mossberg lists it as 6.75lbs?
  • Pillar bedded stock
  • Adjustable trigger

Shooting the Mossberg MVP Patrol

I. ..really like shooting this rifle. The Mossberg LBA trigger, a knockoff of Savage’s Accutrigger, is nice to use, the bolt action is fast (newer versions of the MVP Patrol have a bigger bolt knob), and accuracy was excellent (1-1.5 MOA with bog-standard ball ammo).

Mossberg MVP Patrol vs Ruger American Ranch

The main competition for the Mossberg MVP Patrol is the similarly priced and featured Ruger American Ranch (review here).

Mossberg Pros:

  • Price. As of the time of writing, Ruger American Ranches are going for $860-ish while the Mossberg’s are going for $770 (Canadian pesos)
  • Backup irons. While the Ruger comes with no iron sights, the Mossberg has irons including a fibre optic front sight
  • Weight. The Ruger American is 6.1lbs to the 5.7lbs on the Mossberg

Ruger Pros:

  • Ergonomics. I prefer the safety and magazine release of the Ruger American Ranch a lot more
  • Bolt throw. The Ruger uses a 3 lug bolt which gets you a shorter bolt throw and more clearance around the scope

Both rifles have adjustable triggers. Both rifles have kind of shitty magwells that aren’t great at supporting long AR mags and allow for a LOT of play.

Who should buy this rifle?

If you’re in Canada, this is an option for a coyote or 3 gun rifle. If you’re in the US, I’d just use an AR15 for both of those purposes but I suppose if you ABSOLUTELY need something as light as possible, it’s hard to beat how lightweight these are.
